about

Transience-19 is the direct result of various malfunctions expressed in the mallic-cystacean realm, detected across four concert halls in Serbia, Sierra Leone, Eritrea and Gabon, two jazz cafés in Argentina and a hard drive in Wales. The initial readings, which were picked up first on the Serbian border with Croatia, were received on a modified Karsten-V device, filtered through a Parliss electrobank and finally pressed to shellac, ready for digital conversion. These sonic imprints are presented in the second track, labelled source material.

The raw data was then processed through a series of sonifaction correlators, manufactured in Poland by the Karol Rzysz Corporation in the early 1970s, resulting in two sets of scores – one for brass-centric orchestra and another for a jazz quartet comprising three pianists and a drummer (Morsson Payloy, who coincidentally also featured on the 1947 proto-punk LP "Paris Talks"). Extensive research suggests that the short melodic section in the middle of the piece was originally performed and written by Petter Rylén, the extraordinary Swedish pianist known for his experiments in symbiotic conglomeration with his instrument.

These youthful performers gathered before the difficult days came, before the years drew near and before they said, “I have no pleasure in them”. They gathered before the doors were shut in the streets and the sound of grinding was low and before all rose up at the sound of a bird and all the daughters of music were brought low. As they performed they stumbled thither and yon, malfunctioning in the noonday sun, just as they did in the dusk-light and dimpsey.

Meanwhile, in the present times of ambiguity and isolation, a hard drive whirs, spitting out memories of the past 12 years or so, as it explores its own collapsing tectonics.
