about

For this piece I instructed a trio of trumpet, piano and percussion to explore their acoustic surroundings, both in the immediate vicinity and while crossing into nearby parallel dimensions. The vast majority of the sounds you hear result from the players standing on the boundary lines of multiple dimensions at once. This dramatically affected the acoustic properties of the sounds produced, as well as the motor control of the players themselves. At times you will hear the performers unable to moderate their physical movements as they oscillate wildly between two or more dimensional planes.

I also set other parameters for the musicians: the trumpet player was asked not to play any actual notes but to use only an extended technique involving the percussive use of the tongue. Similarly, the pianist does not play any of the keys but uses the exposed strings and bodywork of the instrument. The percussionist was restricted only to the use of cymbals.
